The Tuaregs

Pictures of the staff who actually ran the expedition, plus some local Tuaregs who live in the desert.

The twelve Tuaregs who drove and cooked for us. I wonder what they are doing now that the temperature is blistering and the tourists are on French beaches?

Al-Hajj, our driver.

Bouboukir, our minstrel (and tea server), and the assistant chef. The soundtrack attached to this picture is "Isifegame", from the CD he sold several of us copies of when we got back to Agadez.

Drumming on buckets.

Issouf, the tour leader.
325.jpg
The son of one of the camel wranglers. He will definitely be cast as an extra when they make a movie of "The Wild Boys".
326.jpg
Here he is leading camels.

A local girl.
328.jpg
Bouboukir playing traditional Tuareg music under a tree near Temet for several residents who are selling trinkets. The goat hangs from the tree in the background.

Once again the Tuaregs prove their independence. Here is an unaccompanied woman talking with a bunch of foreign men.

How you pee in the harmattan.

A reused box in the truck.

A driver's handy knife.

The Tuareg alphabet.

Afternoon prayers. The crew started the expedition praying individually and ended up praying en masse. I have heard it said that women synchronize menstruation when they are cooped up together, too. Only about half the crew were observant to the extent of praying 5 times.
