Ganvié

Ganvié is an unusual village on the lake north of Cotonou. There isn't really any ground at all — it's all built on the water.

One of the most unusual thing about Ganvié is that people definitely didn't like our beards — they'd make scissor gestures with their hands.

Getting close. These branches stuck in the water are part of the fish farming tradition in Ganvié. As the branches decompose, they provide nesting places and food for the fish, who are then caught by the villagers.

Fishing. Not sure why they are gesturing to us that way. Must be some Tofinu insult of unimaginable depravity. Maybe it's the beards.

A bar with a covered terrace. That speaker is the village radio. It played loud enough for the whole town to hear.
