Art

Many places we went had various examples of modern art here or there. We were actually able to take pictures of some of them.

At SFO, a large mosaic commemorating the murals of Balmy Alley in San Francisco.

The most awesome pieces of art we saw the entire trip, at a tiny gallery in London. This was one of two assemblages of random pieces of metal which makes no sense whatsoever if you look directly at it (the other one was just to the right). If you look at its shadow from a light at exactly the right angle, you can see a recognizable image.

A sculpture at Trinity College in Dublin. There's also one of these at UC Berkeley outside what used to be the Pacific Film Archive theater. It would have taken many hours to get through the line to see the Book of Kells, whch is the main tourist attraction at Trinity College.

The courtyard of a school in Dublin.
344.jpg
A mosaic mural in Dublin.
374.jpg
A sign on the ferry to the Isle of Man showing a slide to a lifeboat. But it looks more like chopsticks in a bowl.
421.jpg
Walk / Don't Walk signs in France, a little more stylish than the ones here.
422.jpg
An installation in the middle of a traffic circle near Cherbourg.
431.jpg
Restaurant names in Orleans.

One cute thing about Lyon is that there are large-scale trompe l'oeil murals on many buildings.
453.jpg
455.jpg
Here's a mural of a mural being installed.
461.jpg
One more large flat wall.
462.jpg

470.jpg
A strange sculpture with roller skates next to the Opera in Lyon. We stopped and watched some kids skating right next to there.
471.jpg
475.jpg
A poster for a Tuthankhamen exhibit in Basel which reminded Ray of Michael Jackson.
477.jpg
Clocks on the wall in an Internet cafe in Lausanne.
478.jpg
A nerd joke in Lausanne: a sign that would be on a Microsoft parking garage. Actually, GPL is "liquid propane gas" in French, but whatever.
490.jpg
A machine at a little carnival in Strasbourg.
491.jpg
493.jpg
The horse on the top of Strasbourg's museum of contemporary art.
503.jpg
The city park in Luxembourg has some cute sculptures.
504.jpg
A strange installation of upside-down trees in Lille.
505.jpg
Another strange piece of public art in Lille.
506.jpg
The Burghers of Calais, by Rodin, in Calais, next to the city hall. The banners oppose privatization of the French energy utilities and the World Bank's Comprehensive Development Framework.
