South Africa: Kruger National Park

The day after the eclipse, we drove to Kruger National Park where we saw an amazing variety of game from our car without a guide. It resulted in a difficult drive to Pretoria the following day, but I'm still really happy we went.

We noticed that some elephants we were watching at another watering hole suddenly starting walking away. We looked to the right and saw why -- a huge herd of buffalo started to cross towards them.

We saw about eight lions just walking along the road, not paying any particular attention to us in our car. (It's illegal to get out of your car in Kruger, except in a campground.)

In addition to several steenboks (dog-sized antelopes), we saw many baby impalas and other antelopes, some dragging their umbilical cords as they walked.

There were some beautiful plants amid all the animals.

As we were leaving, the rain was increasing, bringing out this beautiful tortoise.
