{"id":40,"date":"2017-08-28T00:38:17","date_gmt":"2017-08-28T00:38:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/apresmidi.net\/eee2017\/log\/?p=40"},"modified":"2017-08-28T02:01:29","modified_gmt":"2017-08-28T02:01:29","slug":"across-oregon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/apresmidi.net\/eee2017\/log\/2017\/08\/28\/across-oregon\/","title":{"rendered":"Across Oregon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Ashland, we stayed with Dave S, another Opcode coworker, and his family. \u00a0After dinner we went out to hear some music at the Wild Goose, a dive bar where Dave has played.\u00a0<br class=\"\" \/><br class=\"\" \/>On <strong>Tuesday<\/strong>, August 15,\u00a0I worked at Connor&#8217;s house (one of my Avid coworkers), and then introduced Dave S and Connor to each other at dinner.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p><i class=\"\">I went into town\u00a0and paid to have people at the Ashland 76 station replace the headlight on the Outback. \u00a0Dave&#8217;s daughter Sabrina happened to walk into the gas\u00a0station just then, so I drove her back to the juice bar where she works and had coconut and orange juice. \u00a0She is leaving for junior year abroad in\u00a0Alicante this week. \u00a0<\/i><i class=\"\">Afterwards I rode around with Dave S in the woods on a jeep. \u00a0He had just gotten a pair of logging boots with spikes.<\/i><\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\" \/><strong>Wednesday<\/strong> we drove to Ray\u2019s cousin Meg\u2019s goat farm in Eugene. \u00a0Ray slept, and Meg and I walked around her neighborhood. \u00a0One of her neighbors\u00a0had just harvested large amounts of wood on their property in order to raise money so that one of them could buy out another\u2019s share of their parents\u2019\u00a0estate. \u00a0It all smelled like sap.<br class=\"\" \/><br class=\"\" \/><strong>Thursday<\/strong> was another productive work day for me. \u00a0Thursday night we ate with Ray\u2019s other cousins. <em>The food was better than in Ashland, but still not\u00a0definitively out of the Olive Garden class. \u00a0After dinner we visited Colin and Natacia.<\/em> \u00a0<em>Natacia has a setup for playing video games with friends around\u00a0the world. \u00a0She was watching her twitch friends play some game &#8212; she is looking forward to meeting them in person at a convention in Long Beach\u00a0this October, for twitchers. \u00a0She assumes they think she\u2019s a gay guy, and will be surprised at the convention. \u00a0She also said that YouTube had told its\u00a0users that any monetized video had to be accessible to five year olds, and a bunch of them had moved to twitch. \u00a0(Their community guidelines don&#8217;t\u00a0mention five-year-olds &#8212; I figured she was interjecting editorial interpretations.)<\/em><br class=\"\" \/><br class=\"\" \/><strong>Friday<\/strong>, August 18, we drove to Bend. \u00a0We had hoped to go on highway 242 on the side of Mt. Washington, but it was closed due to a fire that was\u00a0casting smoke over the whole area. \u00a0We went to the Sunriver resort, south of Bend, where Ray\u2019s college friend Steve has a house, and where several\u00a0of their friends had rented additional houses for 40 or so people who would go see the eclipse somewhere (Sunriver wasn\u2019t quite in the path). \u00a0Our\u00a0Bend friend Rick was working as a bartender in Sunriver, and he was extremely generous, probably overly so. \u00a0We were joined by one of Steve\u2019s kids.\u00a0\u00a0We stayed at Steve\u2019s house that night, seeing another scion in the evening, and yet another in the morning. \u00a0(We saw the fourth and fifth in Seattle a\u00a0few days later.)<br class=\"\" \/><br class=\"\" \/><strong>Saturday<\/strong>, August 19, after getting over my mild hangover, we pressed on eastward. \u00a0We stopped near the tiny town of John Day, where we visited\u00a0Rick\u2019s friend who is in county jail for six months. \u00a0He said that one of the guys in with him he knew from K-12, another was a Swede doing four months\u00a0for assault at a Rainbow Gathering (circumstances unclear) and that he knew ALL of the guards before. \u00a0The whole strip of highway 26 around John\u00a0Day was awash in eclipse merchandise, though not particularly crowded. \u00a0We drove up highway 7, a very pretty stretch of road, to Baker City, so we\u00a0could check out where the path crossed Interstate 84. \u00a0Interstate 84 was quite an ugly area, especially Cement Plant Road, and I hope somebody got\u00a0some punk eclipse pictures from the ruins of the industrial facilities there. \u00a0There were rolling treeless hills, with no apparent way to get to the top of\u00a0any of them.
