The mission of the last part of the trip was to have a bunch of really good dinners in France, particularly in Lyon, the gastronomic capital. We crossed to Cherbourg, visited Mont St. Michel, and spent a night in Orleans. Then we spent three nights in Lyon. After that we made our way up both sides of the eastern border of France with visits to Lausanne, Strasbourg, and Luxembourg, and ended up in Calais where we caught the Eurostar train back to London to catch our plane.
Cherbourg to Beaune
The early morning fast catamaran ferry to Cherbourg was cancelled due to 40 mph winds in the English Channel. We ended up on the slow ferry which got us there just too late to pick up our rental car to drive to St. Malo where our motel reservation was. On the 13th try we found a hotel with some rooms available there. The next day we drove to Mont St. Michel and Orleans, and then the following day tasted wine in Beaune, wine capital of the Bourgogne. More pictures...
Lyon
Lyon is the gastronomic capital of France, and we'd made reservations at a couple restaurants before we left. More pictures...
Strasbourg and Luxembourg
Strasbourg has a huge Catholic cathedral and many good Alsatian restaurants. Luxembourg is a city with dramatic ravines and cute castles. More pictures...
